Guarding Against Self-Government | Pastor Michael Jackson // Jonah 1:1-17

Join Pastor Mike as he dives into Jonah Chapter 1:

God commands the prophet Jonah to go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against its wickedness. Instead of obeying, Jonah runs away from God and boards a ship heading to Tarshish, in the opposite direction.

While at sea, God sends a violent storm, threatening to destroy the ship. The sailors, terrified, cry out to their gods and throw cargo overboard to lighten the load. Jonah, meanwhile, is asleep below deck. The captain wakes him and urges him to pray to his God.

The sailors cast lots to discover who is responsible for the storm, and the lot falls on Jonah. He admits he is fleeing from the Lord, the God of heaven, and tells them to throw him overboard to calm the sea. The sailors reluctantly do so after praying for mercy, and immediately the sea becomes calm.

The sailors are filled with awe and worship the Lord. Meanwhile, God provides a great fish to swallow Jonah, and he remains in the fish’s belly for three days and three nights.
