Welcome To THE ENQUIRER | Interactive ~ In-Person ~ Bible Study 1 Timothy 5:3-16
Paul instructs Timothy on how the church should care for widows and manage its resources wisely. He teaches that true widows—those who are alone, godly, and devoted to prayer—should be honored and supported by the church (vv. 3–5). However, if a widow has children or grandchildren, her family should take responsibility for her care first, as this pleases God and prevents the church from being overburdened (vv. 4, 8, 16).
Paul also gives qualifications for widows who should receive official church support: they must be at least sixty years old, faithful to one husband, and known for good works, such as helping others and serving the needy (vv. 9–10). Younger widows are encouraged to remarry, raise families, and manage their homes to avoid idleness, gossip, and temptation (vv. 11–15).
In summary:
This passage emphasizes caring for those truly in need, the importance of family responsibility, and maintaining godly conduct and order within the church community.
