Paul gives Timothy instructions on how to care for widows within the church community. He teaches that true widows—those who are alone and place their hope in God—should be honored and supported (vv. 3–5). However, widows who have family members are to be cared for by their own relatives first, as this shows devotion to God and repays their parents or grandparents (vv. 4, 8).
Paul explains that only widows who are truly in need, at least sixty years old, and known for their good works should be officially placed on the church’s care list (vv. 9–10). Younger widows, however, are encouraged to remarry, manage their households, and not become idle or gossiping busybodies (vv. 11–15). He warns that when younger widows turn away from Christ to follow worldly desires, it brings reproach.
Paul concludes by urging believers to help those who are truly in need while allowing families to take responsibility for their own so that the church’s resources can be used wisely (v. 16).
